Brightest Blessings,

Prof. Rainmaker

Description: We have probably all heard of mummies and maybe even seen some images of them. The
common image that comes to mind is, of course, that of the Egyptian mummies, wrapped in many layers of bandages, covered with a golden mask, placed in a heavy sarcophagus, and placed inside a pyramid. These, however, are not the only mummies around. In fact, many cultures have produced mummies, including the Incas, Japanese, Chinese, Aztecs, and even northern Europeans.

Required textbooks or materials:

Several apples

Several small containers, such a plastic drinking cups

Baking powder (ca. 1/3 cup)

Clean, dry sand (ca. 2 cups)

Canning and pickling OR kosher salt (ca. 2 cups) Regular table salt had added chemicals
which may alter the outcome of the experiments.

Peat moss (ca. 1 cup)

Small glass or metal baking dish

Small strainer or mesh frame (a cheap picture frame without the glass, covered with
gauze or cheese cloth, works well)

Oven mitts or potholders

Digital camera

Estimated time for completion:  6 weeks

Safety Warnings:  Some of the images of mummies may be disturbing. Viewer’s discretion is advised.

Prerequisites: None.
