Departments of Study

The basic Course of Study in the Grey School of Wizardry is covered in the Grimoire for the Apprentice Wizard. However, the Grey School also offers many other classes and lessons that are not contained in the Grimoire. New classes will be added continually.

Levels are indicated after some classes, as follows: 1+ means 1st year; 2+ means 2nd year; etc. Of course, students may take 1+ classes in any year, and 2+ classes in their 2nd year and any year thereafter, etc. And students may take several classes simultaneously. Classes are worth an average of two credits upon completion, and 24 credits are required to complete each year.

NOTE: Certain classes are required for all first-year students as pre-requisites to all other studies.

This Department provides an introduction to Magick and Wizardry. It is the mission of this Department to help Apprentices acquire an essential understanding of what it means to be a Wizard.

2. Department of Natural Philosophy (Silver) [ View Class List ]
Natural Philosophy includes all aspects of metaphysics and mysticism that relate to Nature and Her Mysteries. This Department also covers the more practical aspects and workings of appreciating the natural world and adventures in Nature—such as Camping, Woodcraft and conservation.

3. Department of Magickal Practice (Gold) [ View Class List ]
Magickal Practice includes the practical foundational basics and magickal hardware: theory, tools, regalia, your sanctum sanctorum, principles of correspondences, signs, symbols, spells and charms.

4. Department of Psychic Arts (Aqua) [ View Class List ]
The Department of Psychic Arts is rooted in meditation. Through self-study, you gain an understanding of energy in all its forms. This is integral in the practice of Magick and Wizardry as well as taming the mind. Studies include Mystery School teachings of the Far East, Dreamwork, trance, creative visualization, psychokinesis, and telekinesis.

5. Department of Healing (Blue) [ View Class List ]
Healing refers to all forms of magickal arts and other practices devoted to curing diseases, relieving aches and pains, promoting tissue regeneration, restoring vitality and fertility, etc. Throughout history, healers have been the folk doctors, nurses and midwives.

6. Department of Wortcunning (Green) [ View Class List ]
Wortcunning (“herbal wisdom”) is the old word used for the knowledge of the secret properties of herbs, and this has always been a particular study of the Wise. Wortcunning includes all aspects of herbal lore and plant magicks. This Department also covers practical work—such as Gardening and Kitchen Witchery. This Department is color-coded “green.”

7. Department of Divination (Yellow) [ View Class List ]
Divination is the art of foretelling or predicting the future; or discovering things that are lost, hidden or secret. Although not all seers are Wizards, all Wizards are expected to at least dabble in the trade of seers. Over the ages, seers have devised many techniques of divination—called the Mantic Arts (from mantis, meaning “diviner”).

8. Department of Performance Magicks (Orange) [ View Class List ]
Performance Magick divides into two main branches, each with its own techniques for opening the mind through entertainment. Conjury or Stage Magic deals with “miraculous” illusions and special effects, which are used in enhancing the theater of ritual. Magic acts, acrobatics, juggling, puppetry, and fire-eating all came from such rituals. The Bardic Arts deal with music and language as a way of raising consciousness, evoking emotions, and transmitting ideas. These include musical instruments, chants, poetry, singing, and storytelling. In contemporary magickal rituals, the two branches of Performance Magick often work hand-in-hand.

9. Department of Alchemy & Magickal Sciences (Red) [ View Class List ]
This Department concerns the science of magic and the magic of science, especially transmutation and transformation. The forerunner of modern chemistry, Alchemy sought to turn base metals into gold and formulate an Elixer of Life which would grant immortality. The inner Mysteries of Alchemy concern the transformation and perfection of the soul. Contemporary aspects include metallurgy, life extension, robotics and artificial intelligence. Other topics include soapmaking, home brewing, technomagicks, nonmedicinal aspects of aromatherapy, chemistry, and additional areas where magic and science overlap through the manipulation of substances or objects.

10. Department of Lifeways (Rose) [ View Class List ]
This Department addresses aspects of personal life and relationships, as well as interactions outside of school, including parents and external communities.

11. Department of Beast Mastery (Brown) [ View Class List ]
Beast Mastery concerns everything to do with animals of all kinds—especially animal communication. Beast Masters include “horse whisperers,” animal trainers, pet psychics, and all people who seem to have an uncanny ability to communicate and work with animals. Beast Mastery includes knowledge of zoology, cryptozoology, and the lore of Totems. Beast Masters seek to know the names of all animals, as well as how they evolved, what they eat, their behaviors, lifestyles, mating rituals, and languages. The Lore of fabled animals is also included in this Department.

12. Department of Cosmology (Violet) [ View Class List ]
Welcome to the World of Cosmology! In this Department we will explore no less than the wonders of the Universe.

The great bowl of the night sky—the celestial sphere—that surrounds our tiny globe has always been a subject of magickal and Wizardly studies. The movements of the Sun, Moon and planets through the signs of the Zodiac gave us our calendar, our first way of keeping time, and our earliest form of effective divination. Cosmology is also concerned with the larger questions: How did everything begin? Where are we going? Is there anyone else out there?

13. Department of Mathemagicks (Clear) [ View Class List ]
The Pythagorean Mysteries laid the foundation for all mathematics; particularly arithmetic, geometry and music. According to Pythagoras, everything in the universe is based upon fundamental “blueprints” of geometric patterns that repeat over and over in an endless dance of sound, light and color. They create the entire natural world, and allow us to experience all the reality we know.

14. Department of Ceremonial Magick (White) [ View Class List ]
Ceremonial Magic is based upon both the Qabalah and the Hermetica. Ceremonial Magick can be a transcendental experience that takes the magician into mystical realms and into communication with the Higher Self. This Department covers all forms of rites and rituals, for all purposes.

15. Department of Lore (Grey) [ View Class List ]
Lore means “teachings,” and Lore Mastery is all about knowing arcane (hidden) secrets and esoteric mysteries known to very few others. It is said that “knowledge is power,” and a Wizard would be remiss to ignore the power that information brings. Lore particularly concerns myths and legends; a Lore-Master is also a storyteller, who can always come up with a tale to make any point.

16. Department of Dark Arts (Black) [ View Class List ]
The simplest form of Low Magick is sorcery, in which a physical act is performed to achieve a result. Sorcery forms the bulk of folk magick, and is often referred to as “Black Magick” or “the Dark Arts.” An important part of this Department are classes in Defense. Also included here are “Children of the Night,” such as Demons, Ghosts, Vampires, and Werewolves.
